Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S22 series of Android flagships in 2022. Their latest alleged leak suggests that the upcoming smartphones could practically use tempered-glass rear camera-hump protectors made for their predecessors – except for the top-end variant, of course. The S22 Ultra’s putative camera cut-out matches those of some previous tips, thereby again hinting at a significant re-design.
The Galaxy S21 and S21+ are currently projected to gain successors that diverge from them in terms of display size to varying degrees, with the S22 now believed to become a Mini variant, even compared to its previous generation. However, several leakers assert that both phones will stay looking more or less the same from the back compared to their respective forebears.
This alleged design stagnation on Samsung’s part is upheld in a new leak, courtesy of the tipster 8090 Digital Beauty on Weibo. This user claims to have snapped “S22 tempered films” in the wild. These objects, as their description suggests, appear to be protectors made of tempered glass; however, these ones may have been cut to fit the rear cameras of each putative S22 variant, rather than their displays as portrayed in another recent leak.
The smaller 2 of these exhibit a traffic-light configuration with curved and flourished edges that do indeed look like very iterative refinements of the “frame-cam” rear shooter module developed for the S21 and S21+. The remaining object, however, could well have been produced based on renders associated with the S22 Ultra.
This ultra-premium device is indeed slated to diverge somewhat from its predecessor’s mega-hump with one that either splits its increased rear camera count between the same kind of traffic light module and a smaller, secondary hump to its right – or a radical re-design in which each lens concerned simply protrudes directly from the rear panel.
To recap briefly, there are strong hints that both are authentic and that the latter in fact corresponds to a presumably apex-level S22 Ultra variant that also incorporates an S Pen. In any case, the final and largest “camera protector” featured in this new leak conforms to the former.
All in all, this leak yet again suggests that nearly all of the innovation in this upcoming line has been reserved for its largest and presumably most expensive members.
