New Apple Leak Reveals iPhone 13 Design Shock

Apple’s iPhone 13 range is likely to be scarce on arrival with massive price markups, but it also offers some intriguing (and highly practical) upgrades fans will love. And now they just got better.

In a new exclusive, Bloomberg’s respected Apple insider Mark Gurman has revealed a ton of information about the upcoming iPhone 13 line-up. Some of it confirms details we already knew, but — in a shock this close to release — there are head-turning revelations as well.

iPhone 13 Surprise Upgrades

Gurman’s big news centers on the range’s massive new rear cameras as he has revealed an exciting new recording mode dubbed ‘Cinematic Video’, which brings the same bokeh effect seen in Portrait Mode photos to your videos. Moreover, while such a feature has been rumored before, Gurman goes further. He explains that Cinematic Video is more than just a bokeh lawyer and — like Portrait Mode — it is also customizable “allow[ing] users to change the amount of blur after recording” as well as adjusting lighting and background effects. This requires seriously powerful hardware.

On top of this, Gurman says Apple will introduce a significantly upgraded system of filters for still images. Rather than applying the filter to the entire image, the new iPhone 13 filters will be able to target specific objects and subjects within the photograph. If this works half as well in practice as it sounds in theory, I suspect these partial/targeted filters are going to be the next big trend on Instagram.

Gurman also details what is likely to be an iPhone 13 Pro-exclusive feature called ‘ProRes’. This is a higher quality video format comparable to ProRAW for images (currently an iPhone 12-Pro exclusive). ProRes will perform a similar function to ProRAW, giving enthusiasts more editing control over their content. ProRes will undoubtedly use a lot more storage space than standard video, which also gives credence to leaks Apple will introduce a 1TB iPhone 13 Pro.

iPhone 13 Confirmations

In addition to his new leaks, Gurman also confirmed some of the biggest iPhone 13 leaks we’ve seen so far. Specifically, he states that Apple will indeed introduce 120Hz ProMotion displays (likely Pro models-only) with a smaller notch alongside a faster A15 chip.

Gurman has also previously tipped an always-on display while multiple leaks claim Apple will introduce next-gen WiFi, an upgraded 5G modem, noticeably bigger batteries and slightly faster charging. On the flipside, Gurman revealed Apple has scrapped plans to bring back Touch ID for this year’s iPhones.

Of course, the big question is now whether Apple can make enough iPhone 13 models to meet demand after the company issued an official warning last month. Or if the smart money waits given the first iPhone 14 leaks have already arrived.
